It is the question we get asked more than any other. A client sends a photo of a bare living room wall, then two screenshots: one of a warm, ribbed timber-look panel, one of a glossy white-and-grey marble finish. Which one should they go with?
Both are good choices. They just solve different problems. Below is a guide from Suimas Interiors detailing what you should know about fluted panels and marble sheets.
What fluted panels actually do for a room
Fluted panels are vertical ribs that catch light and cast soft shadows across the wall. That shadow is the whole point. A flat painted wall reads as background; a fluted wall reads as texture, and texture is what makes a room feel designed rather than furnished.
They work especially well when your TV is dark and large. The vertical lines give the eye something to follow, so the screen stops looking like a black rectangle floating in space. They also soften sound slightly, which matters in apartments with tiled floors and hard surfaces.
The tradeoff: the grooves collect dust. Not much, and a weekly pass with a dry cloth handles it, but it is worth knowing before you panel an entire wall.
What marble sheets do better
PVC marble sheets give you the look of a solid marble slab at a fraction of the weight, cost and installation difficulty. The surface is completely flat and non-porous, so it wipes clean in seconds. That makes it the stronger choice for households with young children, for salons and clinics where surfaces get touched constantly, and for coastal homes in Mombasa, Nyali or Kilifi where humidity punishes absorbent materials.
Marble sheets also reflect light. In a small or north-facing living room that can make a real difference to how bright the space feels.
The tradeoff: gloss shows fingerprints and glare. If your TV sits opposite a large window, a high-gloss marble panel directly behind it can bounce daylight into the screen.
The combination most clients land on
After walking through both options, the majority of our clients choose neither exclusively. They choose both.
The layout that works: a marble sheet panel in the centre, directly behind and around the television, with fluted panels running down either side. You get the clean, wipeable, light-reflecting surface where the TV and media unit sit, and the warmth and depth of texture framing it.
Add a recessed LED strip behind the fluted sections and the ribs throw a gradient of light up the wall after dark. That is the detail that makes a wall look like it cost far more than it did.
What drives the cost
Wall size is the biggest factor, but not the only one. Corners, returns around windows or doors, trim quality, whether skirting is replaced, and whether painting is included all move the final figure.
