Wardrobes are often one of the last decisions homeowners make on a new build or renovation. Yet they’re among the first things people regret getting wrong. The choice between fitted and freestanding isn’t really about style. It comes down to how long you plan to stay, how awkward the room is, and whether you value flexibility or maximum storage more.
At Suimas Interiors, we see this trade-off every day. We help clients choose the solution that fits their lifestyle, not just their bedroom.
What fitted wardrobes actually give you
A fitted wardrobe is built into the room, floor to ceiling and wall to wall. It’s designed around the exact dimensions of your space. This means zero wasted space above, beside or behind the unit. That matters enormously in the smaller bedrooms typical of Kenyan apartments and starter homes.
Fitted units can be designed around obstacles that would defeat a standard freestanding piece: a sloped ceiling, an awkwardly placed window, a chimney breast, or an alcove that isn’t quite a standard size. The interior can be fully customised with drawer banks, shoe racking, a jewellery drawer, hanging rails at two heights and a mirror built into a sliding door. Everything is specified to how you actually dress, not how a factory assumes you do. See our Modern Wardrobes Designs page for the range we build.
What freestanding wardrobes give you
A freestanding wardrobe is bought or built as a standalone piece. It can be moved, sold or taken with you when you relocate. This makes it the practical choice for renters, for anyone in a home they consider temporary, and for owners who like to rearrange a bedroom layout occasionally.
Cost per unit is generally lower than an equivalent fitted run. The buying decision is faster too, since options are pre-built rather than designed from scratch.
The trade-off is space efficiency. A freestanding wardrobe is built to standard dimensions, so it rarely fits a room perfectly. There is almost always a gap above it collecting dust, and a gap beside it that is too narrow to use for anything else. In a small bedroom, that wasted space is often the difference between a room that feels organised and one that feels cramped.
Awkward rooms favour fitted
Kenyan apartment bedrooms frequently have an odd corner, a low beam, or a window positioned close to a wall corner. A fitted wardrobe absorbs these constraints into its design. A freestanding wardrobe simply cannot fit around them. It often ends up positioned less than ideally as a result, blocking a window or crowding a doorway.
Rentals and short-term housing favour freestanding
If a lease is uncertain or short, spending on a fitted wardrobe that stays with the landlord’s property rarely makes financial sense. Freestanding units protect that investment by moving with the tenant.
A middle option: semi-fitted
Some owners choose a hybrid: a fitted wardrobe frame with standard, factory-made interior fittings rather than fully bespoke ones. This captures much of the space efficiency of fitted storage at a lower cost than a fully bespoke interior. It suits owners who want the fit but not the top-tier finish.
What it costs
Freestanding wardrobes typically cost less per unit, in the [insert range] band for a standard double wardrobe. Fitted wardrobes are priced per linear metre and typically fall in the [insert range] band depending on interior fittings and door type. A walk-in wardrobe conversion sits above both.
