Aluminium vs uPVC Partition Framing: A Cost and Durability Comparison

Oct 5, 2026 admin 4 min read

uPVC framing, has started appearing as a cheaper alternative to aluminium in Kenyan partition quotes. It is worth understanding honestly before choosing it. The two materials are not simply different price points on the same product. They behave differently in ways that matter over the life of an office.

What Each Material Is

Aluminium partition framing is an extruded metal profile, typically powder-coated to the required colour. It holds glass panels in a rigid frame.

uPVC is an extruded plastic profile. It is usually available in a narrower range of factory finishes—most commonly white, grey, or a woodgrain foil.

Cost

uPVC framing is generally cheaper than aluminium. This is the main reason it is gaining ground in budget-conscious Kenyan fit-outs.

The material itself costs less to extrude. It also requires less specialist fabrication than aluminium profile cut and finished to order. For a large office where every linear metre of partition counts toward the total, this difference is real and worth considering.

Strength and Structural Performance

Aluminium is significantly stronger relative to its cross-section. This matters most in:

  • Taller partition runs
  • Wider glazed openings
  • Anywhere the partition carries a door that will be used heavily through the day

uPVC is more flexible and has a lower load tolerance. This means uPVC-framed partitions typically need more frequent vertical supports over the same span. This can affect how open a partitioned space feels.

Finish and Colour Options

This is where aluminium has a clear advantage for any office concerned with brand presentation.

Powder-coated aluminium can be matched to almost any RAL colour—including a specific corporate brand colour. It holds that finish well over years of use.

uPVC is limited to the manufacturer’s standard colour range—almost always white, grey, or a basic woodgrain foil. Custom colour matching is rarely available.

For any office planning branded partitioning—covered in our Frosted Glass Partitions with Branding article—aluminium is the only practical choice.

How Each Ages

Aluminium framing holds its finish well over many years. Powder coating resists UV fading and general wear better than most alternatives.

uPVC can discolour and become brittle with prolonged heat exposure. This is a genuine consideration in Kenyan offices with significant west-facing glazing or limited air conditioning.

Aluminium also machines and repairs more easily if a section is damaged. uPVC profile damage more often means replacing the full length.

Where uPVC Makes Sense

uPVC framing suits lower-budget internal partitioning where:

  • Load spans are short
  • Branding and colour matching are not a priority
  • The partition is not expected to carry heavy door traffic

Back-office storage divisions, low-visibility internal partitions, and budget-constrained fit-outs where cost per metre is the deciding factor are reasonable applications.

Where Aluminium Is the Right Call

Aluminium is the right choice for:

  • Any partition carrying a frequently used door
  • Any run requiring brand colour matching
  • Reception and client-facing glazing
  • Any partition spanning a significant width without intermediate support

For clinics and offices where the partition system needs to look considered rather than purely functional, aluminium remains the stronger choice.

The Honest Recommendation

For most Kenyan commercial fit-outs, the cost saving from uPVC is smaller than it first appears. This is true once reduced span, limited colour options, and faster ageing are factored in.

We recommend uPVC only for low-visibility, low-traffic internal divisions. We recommend aluminium everywhere the partition is seen, branded, or used heavily.
