Frosted glass used to be specified purely for privacy. In Nairobi offices today, it is increasingly used for branding too. These two decisions are costed very differently.
Here is what frosted branding actually costs—broken down by method and by how much of the glazing is covered.
Two Techniques, Two Price Points
Frosted vinyl film is a self-adhesive film applied to the glass surface, either as a plain frosted strip or custom-cut into a logo, pattern or wayfinding text. It is the cheaper option and, critically, it can be removed and replaced if the brand changes, the office is re-let, or the design simply needs refreshing in a few years.
Acid-etched or sandblasted glass achieves a permanent frosted finish by treating the glass surface itself rather than adding a film. It has a more premium, tactile feel that reads as a genuine architectural detail rather than an applied sticker. However, it is priced into the glass fabrication and cannot be changed later without replacing the panel entirely.
Most Nairobi offices specify vinyl film for branding that may change—such as a logo or campaign message. They reserve etching for permanent architectural features, such as a frosted strip at a fixed privacy band.
Plain Frosted Strip vs Custom Logo
A plain frosted band, used purely for privacy or safety manifestation at door height, is priced per linear metre. It is the lowest-cost option in either film or etched form.
A custom-cut logo or wordmark costs more. It is priced by design complexity and cutting time rather than a simple metre rate. A simple single-colour logo cut into film costs noticeably less than a detailed multi-element design.
As a guide:
- Plain frosted manifestation strip across a standard partition run: falls in the [insert range] band.
- Custom logo cut into one or two feature panels (such as a reception glass wall): typically adds [insert range] on top of the base partitioning cost.
- Full branding across every internal glass partition in an office: scales up from there.
Reception Glazing vs Internal Meeting Rooms
Branding reads differently depending on where it sits. This affects the design brief as much as the cost.
Reception and entrance glazing is the highest-value branding location. It is the first thing a client or candidate sees, and justifies a larger design investment.
Internal meeting room glazing is seen daily by staff rather than visitors. A simpler frosted strip with the company wordmark—rather than a full illustrated design—is usually the more cost-effective and longer-lasting choice.
What Pushes the Cost Up
Several factors increase frosted branding costs:
- Multi-colour designs: Cost more than single-colour cut film, since each colour is typically a separate layer.
- Curved or double-height glazing: Costs more to template and install accurately than a standard flat partition run.
- Etched glass: Costs more the larger the panel, since the whole sheet has to be fabricated to that finish rather than a film applied afterwards.
Branding priced into the original partitioning quote is more cost-effective than adding it to glass that is already installed. Panel sizes and glazing positions can be planned around where the branding will sit.
